After the Marathon Oil/US Steel merger, US Steel decided they did not want to be in the Real Estate Development business. They sold their acquired real estate holdings to Bobby Ginn who was a major developer on the island at that time. The subsequent bankruptcy of Ginn forced his holdings, including Wexford, into bankruptcy. Gaelic Properties, a corporation that included several Wexford property owners, negotiated the purchase of all the Wexford assets. They continued to sell properties and maintain the amenities but during the real estate slump of the late 80's and early 90's this became increasingly difficult. Many negotiations with banks, cooperation of the Wexford Board of Directors, and creativity on the part of the individuals involved kept Wexford out of bankruptcy again. We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who got us through those troubled times.
Frank Copeland , our executive chef, provides a variety of delicious menus to enhance a busy social calendar. Special Theme Dinners have become popular and the addition of Pub Night on Sundays has added a casual social note. Formal dining on Saturdays has disappeared due to lack of support. Nick Vasil and Dhiresh Karkera, Food and Beverage Managers, coordinate the variety of events that keep us busy in every season of the year.
Bob Fulton became our head Golf Professional in late 2005 following Buddy Mackey, who succeeded Todd Rickenbach. Bob, with the help of his excellent staff, has kept golfers busy with tournaments, clinics, demo days and Òjust for funÓ events that get people together. Similarly Patrick Mason, our long time tennis pro, grooms championship teams, promotes skills practice, and arranges a calendar full of tennis socials as well. A tennis center building was added to the complex in 2004. Croquet has attracted both serious players and those who just want a new game to add spice to their sporting lives. The harbor now has two rowboat and kayaks for use in the harbor by those who would like to get on the water.
A group of thoughtful Wexford residents established the Wexford Care Committee, WeCare, who have made themselves available to those who need some extra support during a crisis or illness. This committee has made hundreds of meals and provided needed services to dozens of neighbors in time of need. They are our unsung heroes.
A book discussion group meets once a month except for summer and several bridge groups appeal to those who enjoy cards. In 2007 the Entertainment and Travel Club, Wexford ETC, was formed to provide opportunities for members to learn about and experience events and places they might otherwise miss. It is proving to be most interesting, fun, and informative.
Keeping all these balls in the air and overseeing all of the business and community affairs required is our club manager, Bob Gusella, now in his tenth year. He is assisted by staff that helps to keep life on an even keel for all of us. A Board of Directors elected by the homeowners meets regularly to set policy and make decisions about the plantation. After 25 years they are challenged by some pressing needs. Most of our homeowners realize that and it is hoped that all will work together to keep Wexford the premier community it has been for 25 years.
